Developing algebraic activity through conjecturing about relationships

Abstract This manuscript contributes to research on how algebraic thinking about operations and properties can develop, relevant forms of curricular activity. The key question asked is: students’ early activity be fostered through focusing relations involving properties? We adopt Radford’s three aspects (indeterminacy, denotation analyticity), which focus considering, symbolising operating unknown objects. investigate the work a class 11–12 year old students in re-analysing data collected over 20 years ago as part project exploring Our findings point proposal that conjecturing relationships powerful route into algebra. On basis our analysis we propose an extension third aspect (analyticity) include structuring mathematical space , e.g., set conjectures.
